Through the infusion of a few clustering species roses (particularly R. multiflora and its rambling hybrids, and to a lesser extant, R. wichurana) the small-flowered bouquet clustering was developed in repeat-blooming roses, the Tea and China contributing their remontant genes. The breeding of the early Polyanthas began in the 1870s, and by the end of the great interest in producing new Polys, in the 1930s, these roses had undergone a substantial transformation, from dwarf, compact bushes with small flowers to much more robust plants with large foliage and flowers. It was then recognized that a new group of roses had emerged which were initially dubbed Hybrid Polyanthas, a name subsequently changed to Floribundas.
Grouping the habits of the Polyanthas from large to small we can almost see the historical progression of the breeders art; although now that the old Polys are being used again to infuse the modern Miniature Roses with cluster-flowering, we have come full circle.
Habits Beginning with the earliest Polys and following through to the latest we see four distinct habits: 1) the very compact Polyanthas are often under 2' in height, with sprays of two dozen or more tiny double flowers, as with Mignonette; 2) with time they grew into larger shrubs, very compact, like Marie Pavie, often rather spreading like The Fairy; 3) the hardiness of the ancestor, R. multiflora was encouraged as breeders sought to insure the usefulness of the Polys, resulting in the popularity of a group of sports and hybrids of Orleans Rose, which had very husky basal canes, rather bristly, and large pyramidal heads of flower; 4) ultimately many Polys began appearing which showed,, despite their willingness to bloom if hard pruned and kept small, a very tall stature, many capable of making shrubs of 6' or more, like La Marne; and finally 5) the style of the Tea Polyanthas, like Cecile Brunner, is as distinct in growth as in flower; they form large twiggy shrubs with the proliferating branching of the Tea and China roses
